Depths of Peril: Proud to be Ernie

Soldak Entertainment (an indie developer based in Dallas TX) have recently had rare but massive success for an indie studio with last year's Ernie award winning Depths of Peril. So much so that they have been able to shift boxed copies as well as a downloadable version of the game, and these are being sold in outlets across the States like Fry's, RadioShack and Chips'n'Bits.
The game fully deserves all the success it's had, it's an excellent premiere title from Steven Peeler (he's just about a one man team, although his wife writes the excellent in-game fiction). The follow up title Kivi's Underworld, is not as good, although it's still a very playable game. More than anything, it's good to see an independent game selling so many copies! Perhaps the Bytten review and Ernie was part of the success story?

Not just because of the Flatspace II banner on the site do I mention the redesigned Retro 247. The site lists and promotes independent game with good old fashioned gameplay and is clearly capitalising on the growing retro gaming cult. Founded by Marc Georgeson of Addictive 247 fame, an early game by Addictive was one of the first ever Bytten reviews.
